One last thing: if you haven't already done so, you can look for Joseph yourself on the 1881 census at www.familysearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org). I don't see him but you may be able to track him down with a little bit of creative searching...

Good luck,
Trish

I bet Alfred was actually a grandson... The 1891 census has the following entry:

Address: 15 Hyde Road, Shoreditch, London
Henry SCARFE Head 39 Boot Finisher born Ipswich Suffolk
Emma SCARFE Wife 39 born Ipswich Suffolk
Alfred SCARFE Son 12 Scholar born Ispwick Suffolk

Reference: RG12/250 Folio 162 Page 8

So, is Henry SCARFE actually Joseph's son, Harry? And, if so, is it plausible that Alfred is Harry's son [and, therefore, Joseph's grandson]? I think so after finding Harry on the 1881 census:

Address: Magdalin St., Colchester St. Botolph, Essex
Harry SCARF Lodger [Head is written in above Lodger] 29 Cordwainer born Ipswick [sic] Suffolk
Emma SCARF Lodger [Wife is written in above Lodger] 29 born Ipswich

Reference: RG11/1787 Folio 72 Page 25

Maybe little Alfred was staying with his grandparents for a time until his parents could get more settled...

There is, however, another Harry Scarfe born in Ipswich - a son of Stephen and Martha, living in Capel St. Mary, Suffolk in 1861, b: abt 1854 (listed as age 7). And children often died young in those days before modern medical means, so the absence of any other likely Alfred in 1891 could have more than one explanation. Probably the best way to be sure is to send for the birth record of Alfred, and the marriage record of Henry and Emma, to see if he is the son of Joseph or Stephen.

Birth record is probably the one for Alfred Walter Scarfe b: Dec qtr 1877, Ipswich (GRO: vol 4a pg 658). (Not to be confused with Alfred William Scarff, b: Ipswich, Dec Qtr 1876). :)

A likely marriage record is between Harry Scarfe and Emma Cook in Jun qtr 1873 in Chelsea (GRO: vol 1a, pg 473).

There is a death record for Ann Scarfe, age 64, in Shoreditch (GRO: vol 1c, pg. 98) in Jun qtr 1886. It is also possible that if Alfred was her child, he was raised by his brother Harry who took him as his own, therefore showing up in the 1891 census as his son...

In 1891, Joseph Scarfe (mis-transcribed Searfe) b: Sommerson, Suffolk, age 66, bootmaker is living in Shoreditch with his daughter Eliza Woolner, her husband Thomas, and their children Ann and Thomas. Missing is Alfred.

Death record for Joseph: Jun qtr 1891, Shoreditch, age 66 (GRO: vol 1c pg 117).

Found a marriage record of Joseph Scarfe to either Harriet Talbott or Hannah (Ann?) Waspe in Jun qtr 1847 in Bosmere, Suffolk in which Somersham is located (GRO: vol 12 pg 475). How certain are you that his wife was Ann Plummer? It might be worth sending for this certificate...

There is a death record for George Edgar Scarfe, age 41 in Dec qtr 1890 in Guiltcross (GRO: vol 4b pg 170), which is in Norfolk, as is Ely which spanned Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. The 1871 census shows George as a lodger in Islington, occ: bootmaker, but the age of 33 has been revised to read 23 which is not reflected in the index (so shows the wrong birth year). It also lists him as married at that time, although no wife resides with him... Will try to locate him in 1881...

Found him! He's listed as George Scarf, age 30, living with his wife Elly at her parents' home (John and Mary Knight) at 22 Orange St, in Bristol St Paul, Gloucestershire.

The marriage record shows George Alfred Scarfe m: Eliza Knight Mar qtr 1880 Bristol (GRO: vol 6a pg 139). So, did I misread the marital status in 1871, or is this his second marriage?
