I have reached a brick wall with Charles and Jane Rose. Charles was born c1836 and Jane was born c1841, both in Berkshire. I do not know Jane's maiden name. Their children were James, John (known as Jack), Eli, Sarah, Ellen, Eliza, Mary, Henry, Phoebe and Albert. Apparently they were well known in Newbury as a family of Hawkers.

I would be very grateful for any information, no matter how small.

Thank you.

Hi Rose,

If you get a birth certificate of one of the children it will give the mothers maiden name.

Do you have more information such as year and place of birth for the children and place of birth for the parents?

We may be able to find them in census for you.

In many instances hawkers did tend to move around so they may be missing from official records.

"Lambaum Road in open air or tent".

In case you want to find the place on a map, this should read Lambourn Road.

Looking at the ages of the children and mother in the census returns provided; it might restrict the period of time when the couple married to a farily narrow period. The birthplaces of the two eldest children suggest a possible marriage in Hampshire/Dorset.

Searching freebmd http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
shows a marriage:

March 1857, ROSE, Charles - Shaftesbury - vol 5a, page 293
The same vol and page of the index shows that someone called Jane married:
March 1857, HAYTER, Jane - Shaftesbury - vol 5a, page 293

These two may not have married each other, they may not be your couple. But it might be worth bearing in mind for when you get some more evidence to make it worth applying for the certificate.

Thanks for all that information. I already have the censuses but have sent off for the marriage certificate you mentioned. I've also managed to find what I think are the births of 3 of the brothers so have sent off for one of those.
