I have Mary Ann Elizabeth Laxon Smith born to Simon Smith and Mary A. Smith abt. 1837 in Whittlesey, Cambridgshire.

She had siblings:
John Richard Laxon Smith b: abt 1834
Alice Matilda Laxon Smith b: Sep qtr 1838
Janetta Smith b: abt 1841
Simon Smith, Jr. b: Mar qtr 1847
Sophia Caroline b: Mar qtr 1851

I am trying to find out more about the mother, Mary A. Smith. I believe I have found her parents, John Laxon Smith and Alice Laxon, but with all the 'Laxon' and 'Smith' names, I'm not certain. They must have intermarried at some point way back...

So, what I'm looking for specifically is:
1. Is Mary A.E. Laxon Smith's mother's name really Mary A. Smith?
2. Are Mary A. Smith's (?) parents names really John Laxon Smith and Alice Laxon?

Just to confuse things, Laxon was sometimes spelled Laxton.

There is a Christopher Lax(t)on b: abt 1801, married to Mary (?) who had 11 children. Who were Christopher's parents?

I believe Mary A. Smith (?) had siblings: John Laxon b: 1804 d: 1804, Alice (2, b: 1805 & 1807, the first Alice died 1805), Elizabeth b: 1808, and Charlotte b: 1810 d: 1810.

Simon Smith's parents were, I think, Richard Smith and Mary (maiden name not known). Simon had siblings: Ann b: 1806, Alice b: 1808, Janette b: 1809 d: 1874 m: William Jackson, Margaret b: 1810 d: 1813, Mary b: 1811 d: 1811, and John Laxon b: 1813.

Richard had a second wife named Elizabeth, and with her had children: Elizabeth b: 1816, William Boyce b: 1822, Sarah b: 1824, and possibly 2 other children (James & Susan?), who would all have been Simon's step-siblings.

Simon and his wife must have been related by blood, as well as marriage, as both of them had siblings named John Laxon Smith.

Can anyone PLEASE(!!!!!) help me sort this out?

Kester,

Thank you - I had the census entry, but not the birth entry.

Can anyone locate the marriage of Simon and Mary? Problem is, it may not have been until around the birth of Janetta, in 1841, although it may have been as early as 1830. A big spread, to be sure.

OK, I'm ready to have a go at this again...

1. For the record of baptism for Mary Ann Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Simon and Mary Smith, in 1837 Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire: Is there a date given in the parish record beyond the year?

2. I have Mary A. Smith's death certificate on 14 Aug 1853 at age 39 years, so she must have been born abt 1814 but I don't have her maiden name for certain: It was likely either Smith or Laxon/Laxton. Could some kind soul please look in the parish records for her birth in Whittlesey? either St. Mary's, St. Thomas', or St. Edmunds...

3. Still trying to locate the marriage of Simon Smith to Mary A. Smith/Laxon/Laxton. He was a solicitor in Whittlesey and I'm certain there would have been a lawful marriage - probably between 1831 - 1842 (first child b: 1834, certainly married by the 4th, b: 1841).

Can anyone PLEASE help???

Found will of John Laxon Smith in Louisiana (!) July 1840 - age at death not given

He mentions siblings:

Simon Smith - the solicitor that you mention (sadly found in workhouse in 1881)

Alice Smith - married John Ground(s)

William Edward Steven Smith - cannot find him

Janette Smith - married Joseph Gibbs

Smith - Richard & Mary - children baptisms - Whittlesey
Simon 1805
Ann 1806
Alice 1808
Janette 1809
Margaret L 1810
Mary 1811
John L 1813

My interest = Matthew Laxon married Sarah Smith in 1816 in March Cambs
First 3 children all died in 1820 , then Mathhew bc 1822, Emma bc 1824

Can anyone shed any further light on this one??/

many thanks
