I have found my ancestor on the Death Duty Index 1851 and the Court seems to read Durham and PC York. I have tried the Durham site and there is no Anthony Simpson. Where can I see Wills or Admons proved in York, I know they are at the Borthwick but are they available anywhere on-line. Please can anyone help with this query. Chris.

Ancestry has some but not all probate before 1858. The link below takes you to a list of the data sets that they have:

A Probate Index covering the Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York is on line at Origins Network. Then you can apply on line to the Borthwick for an electronic copy of the original documents.

Thanks Peter, will try Origins first and then see if the Probate I want is listed.

Sorry Peter, should have checked Origins before I sent my first reply. Having now done so it seems that Origins only has York Peculiar Court Probates and my Anthony Simpson does not appear. Do you know where I would find an index to the PCCY or do I have to go to the Borthwick to view them?
Chris.

The ones you want are at British Origins, but they're easy to miss because the listing doesn't start with "York". Instead you need to look for "Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York Probate Index 1688-1858".

If you click "National Wills Index" on the home page, you get a list of what they've got which includes "Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York Probate Index 1688-1858".
