Hi all, I really hope someone can help me.

I'm tracking to track down whatever information I can on my Grandad.

I have a copy of his Service and Release book which only states the following:
C Evans (full name is Charles)
RAF Airman
Rank - Sgt
Service Number - 2235179
(there is also a handwritten number in what looks like blue felt of 291 and a stamped number of 247475, have no idea what they are or if they are of any use in the search)
Age and Service Group - 58 (I presume this is just his group number though)?

He enlisted on 03.01.1944 (he would have been aged 18)
and left on 15.05.1947 (aged 22)

His D.O.B 01.04.1925

We believe he was based at RAF Kirkham and although I'm not sure, he was possibly a trainee Lancaster Bomber Rear Gunner.

I have searched the Forces site repeatedly using all and some of the above info and can't find him.

I googled what the RAF Group 58 was and came up blank (that and a couple other numbers appear to not exist)?

I'm at a loss as to what and where to try next and so any help anyone can give us would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

Welcome to British-Genealogy oldmagray:smile5:

This is where you come to when you click on the forums menu in FWR. They are our sponsors although we do general genealogy research free of charge for anyone who asks for help.

Service records for WW11 are still held by the MOD so you will not find them anywhere online. Click Here (http://www.british-genealogy.com/threads/81920-Finding-service-records-for-WW2-and-after?p=585757#post585757) to read our 'sticky' which gives you all the information and links you need to apply for your Granddad's records.

Thank you, my Grandad will have been 18/19 I guess in that photo, not sure when it was taken though.

My dad started restoring the photo, to try and clean up the damage marks (hence the 'clean' bit in the right bottom corner), I'm trying do the rest!

Hi

Group 58 was the classification of his job before he joined up, nothing to do with the RAF.
Apply for his records, then you will know.

There's information on how to get service records HERE (http://www.british-genealogy.com/threads/81920-Finding-service-records-for-WW2-and-after?p=585757#post585757). They're a bit swamped at the moment, so it might be a bit slow.
