Please can anyone help.
Trying to trace my gt. grandmother AGNES TOVEY b.1844.
Census info 1881/1891/1901 gives place of birth as "Bristol Somerset"
I think she was more likely born in a village somewhere in the Bristol area rather than the town itself.

She married in Swanscombe Kent in June 1866. From her marriage cert, her father was called Thomas Tovey, occupation Water Bailiff. She was a servant. Residence at time of marriage Old Ford. I don't know whether this is in Kent or she gave her parents' home village.

I have also posted this query under Somerset.

Thanks
Vicky

VickyVicky,

A few questions for you which may help someone help you:
-- Do you have the 1861 and 1871 census info for your great grandmother?
-- Do you know husband's name, birthdate, place of birth?
-- Do you have children's names, birthdates, places of birth?

Regards,
Trish

Didn't want to bore anyone with the specifics as I didn't think her history after marriage would be of help locating her birth.
1861 census TOOVEY - I can't be sure this is the same person, but in any case its not helpful trying to locate the rest of her family.

What I DO know then -
Working backwards (1901 census most relevant to the start of my search) 1901/1891/1881 are reasonably consistent for Agnes' date & place of birth, given as 1845/6, Bristol, Somerset.
1871 & 1881 census give her as the wife of Thomas Richardson b. c1841 in Swanscombe Kent. He died in Middlesbrough in 1890, age 49 which is consistent with the census data.
The likeliest match for the marriage is June 1866 Swanscombe (Dartford).
Thomas' father George Richardson & the occupation for both father & son is given as Parish Clerk. Thos. age on the marriage cert states 36 which I think is an error. Agnes age given as 22.

There were 2 children born while the family were in Swanscombe, Thos John b. 1868 & George Henry b. 1870. Haven't got birth certs for these yet.
1871 census has the family in Swanscombe, however Agnes place of birth given as Swanscombe (which I assume is an error).
1881 census - they have moved to Middlesbrough. Thos Snr b. 1841, Agnes b.1845, Thos Jnr b.1868, George b.1870, Catherine b.1872, Jessie b.1875 & Emily Eliza b. 1878.
I have confirmed mother's former name for Catherine & Jessie is Tovey (still awaiting birth cert for Emily Eliza).

1891 has Agnes (widow) with George, Eliza (Emily?) and twins Annie (Frances) & Rose, who were born in 1885.
I have no details for Thomas birth yet, as I have found 3 possibilities for the right area & dates!
Hope this information is useful.

Update on this (with a bit of help) I think my Agnes was born in East Harptree, Somerset. 1851 census she is in Somerset with parents & 2 sisters, so have moved my search there. (Still haven't found a birth registration though!)
