My gr grandfather Private William Gibbons was in the Gordon Highlanders 2nd Battalion No 4907. His "Relief of Ladysmith" medal was "forfeited under RW" and he was discharged with ignominy. I would appreciate any information as to why this happened.

Have a look at his service record which is where it should be - National Archives series WO 97 outsourced to Findmypast and available online from that company. Search for free. Downloadable for a small fee.
There's a link in the Research Guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/britisharmysoldierupto1913.htm)
I had a quick look. He does seem to have been a naughty boy
By the way, the regiment appears to have been the Royal Highlanders, not Gordon Highlanders.

Thank you Peter. His record reveals he lied about his past when he emigrated to New Zealand and explains why I have been having trouble researching his family history.
