Hi,
Can anyone explain to me what this entry means, please? It is in a list of births and baptisms at Gorton but I don't understand the entry. It is on this page of Ancestry UK - http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/2959/40365_294388-00024/3116338?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk %2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3frank%3d1%26new%3d1%26MSAV%3d1%26ms T%3d1%26gss%3dangs-g%26gsfn%3dWilliam%26gsfn_x%3dNN%26gsln%3dBertensh aw%26gsln_x%3dNN%26msbdy%3d1705%26msbpn__ftp%3dLan cashire%252c%2bEngland%26msbpn%3d5271%26msbpn_PInf o%3d7-%257c0%257c0%257c3257%257c3251%257c0%257c0%257c0%2 57c5271%257c0%257c0%257c%26cpxt%3d1%26catBucket%3d rstp%26uidh%3d366%26msbdp%3d10%26cp%3d11%26pcat%3d ROOT_CATEGORY%26h%3d3116338%26recoff%3d9%2b10%26db %3dManchesterEarlyBMDCRO%26indiv%3d1%26ml_rpos%3d1&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord.
It says Hannah Jackson of Gorton wife of Samuel Jackson daughter of William Bertenshaw [something I can't read which might be cart maker] born April the 8th day anno Domini ---------1702.
Is this an entry concerning a woman's birth back dated or something else, and f so, what. It has me stumped and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Ros

Hi, Cicily
I think you would need an Ancestry UK subscription. Other than that I don't know why it wouldn't work. It works for me. I think that the page of entries all concerns one family and I am now thinking that it was backdated entries about one family. If anyone could confirm that I would still appreciate it. Thanks for trying to help, Cicily.

This looks like a "family" page at the end of the marriage register of St. James, Gorton, Manchester. Old registers often have the odd page here & there dedicated to certain families...could be the vicar/curates family or close friends. The fact that the page essentially outlines 3 or more generations could be extremely useful to the GARRARD/BERTENSHAW families.

edited to correct: the book appears to start from the back and works forward, as on the first page, it is noted the book was bought in 1718 and how much it cost....following pages give baptisms & burials from 1741...image 7 of 78 shows events from 1707 so this book was obviously to copy events from a previous register.

ok...I've confused myself as image 40 are baptisms from the 1720's obviously if you are looking for a particular family you would need to work carefully through this book, as it could just be a jumble (like many early composite registers are!)

Correction..the surname above should be JACKSON not GARRARD...

Additionally, as I have covered in one of my on-going threads, non-conformist families were often included in conformist parish registers and a whole family would be recorded in one go. However it is unlikely to be the case here as the baptisms appear to have occured in the same year as birth.

However Hannah JACKSON nee BERTENSHAW may have been non-conformist as her birth (not baptism ) is recorded, and the same appears to be the case for their first son Garrard.

Thank you for your answers. That is helpful and, yes, the Bertenshaws were quite likely to be non-conformists. Many thanks for the explanation

William BERTENSHAW's occupation looks to be Felt Maker. I think Michelle's reasoning in post #4 looks to be spot on, especially given that Samuel JACKSON's occupation is shown as Clerk in a couple of the records.

Hi
Thanks for that, Janet. There were a number of felt makers in that family so that tracks. It's also interesting that Samuel Jackson was the clerk. Thank you again.

It looks as though it records her burial.

Hi
I think it is probably a list of birth and/or baptism dates. It's really useful. My thanks to everyone who replied.
