Looking for information on a Joseph Lister Sherrard. carlisle. He was a wing commander in the RAF in WW2, I was helping him write his memoirs and he has sadly been getting worse with dementia and I was hoping to find out more to help him piece bits together, any info would help x

Welcome to British-Genealogy

Unfortunately the only way you can find his personal service record is to apply for it from the MOD. There is nothing online. This sticky (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php/81920-Finding-service-records-for-WW2-and-after?p=585757#post585757) tells you where to apply. The other bad news is that there will be a long wait for them especially now with the added interest at this time.

The National Archives site may be able to help with general information regarding his service. See this page (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-subject/secondworldwar.htm)

The service record applications talk about "obtaining information about yourself". The person with power of attorney should be able to apply on his behalf..

In the meantime the Air Force Lists are available and see this Research Guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/raf-rfc-rnas.htm) for information on the Confidential Air Force List.

Also see these research guides on Squadrons (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-subject/raf-squadron.htm) and Operations (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/raf-op.htm)
