Please may I ask a favour from someone with a sub for Scotland's People?
Would you check the groom's christian name in the Glasgow marriage on 19 May 1899 - Jane MILLS and X SCOTT? It should be either William or John.

I'm "sorting" the Scotts in the WW1 Service Records (trying to make them easier to find!). This guy was enlisted as William, but signed as John. And as he was discharged as medically unfit only 20 days later, there's not much to go on. His children include a William AND a John, so no clues there!

Thanks in advance
Jane

Since it's you, yes.
I've only been in as far as the index, it says William.

Maybe he didn't like the name.

Thank you, Lesley.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that "John" was used for many fraudulent enlistments ... maybe "John Scott" was the Scottish equivalent of "John Smith"!

Interesting idea.....

I spent ages trying to match a Frank in service records to a family without any Franks... Turned out that all his civil records were as Abram, which he hated! The army doesn't seem to have noticed that he'd changed his forename.
