I have a THOMAS GODWIN who is proving difficult to tie down. I need some fresh thoughts.

1868 THOMAS GODWIN age 25 married ELIZA BARNES at register office in Medway (Chatham) father WILLIAM - platelayer THOMAS is an engine driver.

1871 THOMAS, ELIZA & ELIZA(1) living Poplar London he is described as age 26 from Bradford Yorks

1881 (IGI Census) THOMAS, ELIZA & Family living West Ham he is described as age 26 (again!!) from Leeds Yorks engine Driver

Tried for birth certificate - No GODWINS in Yorks around then. 2 THOMAS GOODWINs in Rotherham But fathers were not WILLIAM so I did not get the certs.

Have not found him on 1861 census in Medway but around then railways were being built all over the place so could be almost anywhere. Also not found in 1891 in West Ham.

I am now looking for inspiration.

Hi Stuman,

The image for 1881 shows him as 36 but it has a heavy line through it so the mistake in indexing by the LDS is understandable.

I have taken the liberty of emailing the image to you using the email a friend facility from Ancestry.

Hi Stuman,
This could be Thomas's father.

Leeds, Marriages, September quarter 1838, vol 23 Page 314
William Godwin.

The 1861 census for Leeds has Mary Godwin age 41 widow with 2 daughters Hannah 17 & Sarah Ann 11. All born Leeds. (Maybe a connection here?)

Cheers, Jeremy.
