My great uncle Jack Sandford was a lieut in the Bedfordshire Regt. and was in France in 1916 but I can find nothing about him. Where do I go now?

Hi

This could be his service records at National Archives- http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C1191430
and his medal card - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D5020165
which will also be on Ancestry - in colour and showing both sides.

regards

Robert

Good evening, Oliveoyl, and a warm welcome to Brit Gen...

Was your great-uncle 2nd Lieutenant John Harris Ekin Sandford? If so, then here is the link for his Medal Index Card, which is at The National Archives (TNA): http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?_q=%28Sandford+AND+Bedfordshire+Regiment%29.

And while you are on TNA's website, it would be a good idea to read their excellent Guides about how to search for a WW1soldier. What you find is a bit hit-and-miss because about 60% of WW1 records were destroyed in a disastrous fire during WW2 (including the records of the three grandfathers in the two main lines of my own research.)
