Mark, people can offer help about living people via the pm system, as Sue said.

The National Archives has a research guide which might help: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/adoption.htm

A more drastic route might be to contact ITV's Long Lost Family programme to see if they are doing any more series: http://www.walltowall.co.uk/longlostfamily.aspx

As you don't appear to have her Mothers first name can I presume you don't have her original Birth Certificate? This would be a logical starting place. It is obtainable from the General Record Office website for £9.25.
