In the 1851 census my ancestor William Morley aged 80 was listed as a pauper gardener. Please could someone explain the meaning of this - does it just mean he was poor and a gardener! He has his son, daughter in law and several grandchildren living with him.

I think it is as simple as that, he was a pauper (presumably receiving out-relief) and a gardener.
