I would appreciate help with the 1851 and 1861 census for an Abbott Family. In the 1840s children were born in Tormoham Devon and Paddington and in the 1871 census I have found some in London.

Father - John Samuel Abbott by 1851 a widower (Helen Dunbar was his wife).
Children
- John Samuel Dunbar Abbott (by 1861 was known as John Samuel Dunbar Abbott)
- Duncan Dunbar Abbott
- Helen Dunbar Abbott
- Annie Dunbar Abbott (is listed as a visitor in Devon in 1851)
- William Smith Dunbar Abbott
- Phoebe Ann Abbott
- Elizabeth Mary Bowyer Abbott

Thank you

Ann Grey

Hi Ann,

I am stumped.

I have tried in 1861 under Dunbar, Abbott and Abbot with all sorts of permutations and can not pick them up.

Perhaps they were on The Grand Tour?

Maybe someone else will have better luck.

Sorry,

Hi Ann,
Like Procat, I cannot find your Abbott family on 1861 census but I have found this family in Wales and the similarities to your family seem strange. I know it isn't the right family but there may well be a connection which may point you in the right direction. I will give you the ref, and main family members and if you think it is worth further investigation you will be able to look for yourself.

RG9/4074 Folio 21 Page 14

Duncan Dunbar Bridgen, son 3m
Samuel Bridgett Brother in law 29
Sarah Hannah Bridgett Sister 26
John Edwin Bridgett nephew 8m
Marianna Brey Lawton Aunt 70
Louisa Belcombe Aunt 59

James is an iron merchant employing about 1,000 men & boys. Helen was born in Bombay.

Thought it may be worth bringing to your attention.

Cheers Jeremy.
