before I add this to strays, can anyone work out what the grooms surname might be? I'm assuming the groom's parish is Toft (closest I could find to what looks like Toste?)

It appears to be T....TERE, but searching names of people in Cambridge using T*tere on ancestry doesn't give any surnames that look anything similar.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

edited to add that this could be a shotgun marriage, as it is by licence and the witness is the overseer of Debden, the bride's parish...not relevant but interesting!

Looking at both the name written in the register and that written against the "mark of" Thomas; I don't think that his name started with a "T".

It could be a "P".

I agree with you regarding the other letters. Could the last 4 letters be STERE?

I think the surname might begin with P. Are there any others on the page to compare with?

I know this isn't much help, but I think the first letter of each word is a "P". I wondered if Poste could have a military meaning and that he was based in Cambridgeshire.

I was comparing the first letter to the "T" at the beginning of the first "Thomas", I'll see if I can find a bit with the letter "P" in it. I know "T" and "F" often look similar, and the more I look at it, the more I think it may be FREESTONE.

The place name is always the parish of residence, and I can not see any beginning with P or F, that are short.

here is one showing a "P", which looks different

I've just searched FREESTONE & Cambridge, and looking through hits on ancestry, there does seem to be FREESTONEs born at Toft, Cambridge

And there is indeed a Thomas FREESTONE at Toft in 1841 census, b. 1796 and children baptised at Toft from 1820 parents Thomas & Mary FREESTONE

Thanks everyone..I'll add this one to strays..
