it was some sort of valuation register

Sounds like a Rate Book. A resource that's often overlooked by genealogists.

Hi Peter well if it was it wasn't called a Rate Book someone told me to check with the library this was a few years ago to see if they had them they did and they asked me when i would be going because they would have to bring it up from the basement . when they brought it to me it was in a big box it was a big book . It had the name of the head of the house and how many lived there but no other names . I think the name of the book was something like REVALUATION SOMETHING. I can ring up the library and try and explain to them just thought if someone knows what it was i could just ring and ask to see it Regards elizabeth

Lloyd George Domesday? Land Tax Valuation? (For examples, see Ancestry "London, England, Land Tax Records, 1692-1932")
