I have found an old photograph of an unidentified person in WW1 uniform - the photograph has been cut down and all I can read on the back is Knight, Biggin S.............Does anyone have any idea, from that, where this picture may have been taken please?

Thank you

I wonder if there is any connection to Biggin Hill aerodrome, which was opened by the Royal Flying Corps during WW1?

Thanks for response - will try and upload photo later - am struggling with finding an URL!!! Need to go out now :-)

Was wondering if it was the name of a well known photographer at the time.

One possibility for the photographer is C.C. Knight, who was at 35 Biggin Street, Dover, in 1915-1920 according to post #22 on this thread from the Great War Forum:

Pictures like this were usually taken in a studio, with props and painted backdrops. As he appears to a have a stick, he may have worked with horses......Field Artillery, or a supply regiment.
I can't quite make out his cap badge, but he seems a slightly built man.......almost a jockey sized chap.

Does anyone know why some men wore a belt over their jackets and others didn't? - what is the significance of this, please?

Hi

The belt your gentleman is wearing is a W.E. Patt '08 Waist Belt if this helps at all. Information about these belts:

Your chap's capbadge isvery like worcestershire cap badges (various) if you google-worcesters Regiment cap badges- a page will come up with choices. Try -Cap Badges (Metal) - Worcestershire Regiment (29th/36th of Foot)
Scroll to almost the bottom of the page.

You may be able to pick the most likely by comparing with your photo.
If not similarly google Army cap badges & explore :)

Sorry...ps meant to add there is further information on the site (belts) relating to Web Infantry Equipment - in answer to why some wore their belts and some didn't.
