I'm thinking of posting my tree on the web, but am unsure as to what might be the best software for this task. I would prefer to be able to export my current tree which is at present on Family Tree Maker 2012. I should like to export it in full, media and all, as I have over 21,00 relations and don't fancy inputting it manually and a GEDCOM will not be sufficient for this task. Can anyone therefore recommend some software that will do the trick?
Regards,
John Gage
Most family tree programs have the ability to create a "website" or generate html files. The final results are often rather disappointing, so it would perhaps pay to download a few of the free programs and import your gedcom and media into those to see how their effort looks.
Much depends also upon your ability to "tweak" the code to get the look you want maybe as well as the way you want your site to be used.
For example, there are programs which allow you to create a site which allows others to collaborate with your research by registering and adding their own data or pictures etc. Of course, their edits are only accepted once you OK them, but it is a useful tool for some people. On the downside, those sites tend to be less "user friendly" to the casual visitor.
It may be worth looking at other peoples online sites and see what they use. Several people here use Tribal Pages I notice for example. Mac users have a genealogy program which creates websites too I recall.
I personally use a php based program which is of the "interactive" variety, but my mother and her cousin cannot get on with my site at all.....
Years ago, I did use one of the free genealogy programs to create a basic site, but found I ended up virtually rewriting the entire thing because it was not what I wanted!
Look at other sites, try out the free genealogy programs to test their site building (no idea if FTM can do it or not as I don't use that) and wait to see what other B-G members say. I expect there will be a range of software used!

When considering using genealogy "free" websites to place your tree online be aware that in some cases there is a limit on the amount of data you can enter freely. I used one such site to place a friend's tree online (with his blessing of course). I was uploading names as I researched rather than uploading an existing tree comprising hundreds of names however. But as soon as I started to get near to 200 names I started to get emails from the site owners offering to sell me extra space. As it happened we stopped his tree just below the limit and I ignored the sales pitches.
I'm not sure whether John's tree is 2,100 strong or 21,000 but in either case he would have to pay to use that particular site. I guess that the moral of my story is that you should check the site terms and conditions before starting to use it

Perhaps FTM experts will put me right but I suspect the answer may be like the old joke that if I wanted to get there, I wouldn't start from here.
I have a feeling that the best result but not necessarily the easiest (or cheapest) is this
1. Buy The Master Genealogist, UK edition. This has facilities to import directly from FTM.
2. Buy Second Site and use it to produce your web site
Here's an example of what Second Site can do -

Hi
If you intend to post all your media on to the internet then you do need to keep copyright in mind, posting to the internet constitutes publishing so you would need to ensure that you have permission to post material subject to copyright.
