Hi,

This is a great site with a wealth of information on it. I was wondering if anyone would be able to identify this uniform to fill in some gaps. The solider would be Patrick Cavanagh born in Ireland and possibly conscripted to fight in the Boer war. He came to the US in 1900 so it would have been 1899 or early 1900 if he participated. His profession dealt with horses so he may have been calvary. Each sleeve has an IV stamped on it as well as IV on the belt buckle. I thought it might have been a US uniform but have been unable to find a match.

I cannot open any of these, keep gettting 'No results". Can you shorten the link please? I've tried it every which way.

Please use the Insert Link facility

eg First image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/34668810@N06/7012234725/)

The first image is too dark to make anything out. Perhaps you need to have a go with Photoshop or similar software

The belt buckle is a very distinctive shape. Some similar ones online are described as belonging to Mills cartridge belts. I haven't yet found one marked 'IV' but they come with various designs, such as:

'US'

'RI' (Rhode Island militia):

'SV' (Sons of the Veterans of the Civil War)

'MASS' (Massachusetts volunteers)

So my guess would be that this is an American uniform.
