Hi Everyone
I would appreciate your opinion Please
I have a John Stebbings in my family tree living in Briston, Norfolk.According to the census he was born about 1793 Buxton,Norfolk and his wife Mary was born about 1794 Corpusty,Norfolk.----Luckily for me Buxton is transcribed .But there was no Stebbings. There is however some Stiborns and Stibbons.I found a baptism for John Stiborn 1791 parents Richard and Susanna . I Found a marriage for Richard Stiborn to Susanna Whiteman in 1787.I also found on the IGI a marriage for a John Stibbings to Mary Reynolds 12.Oct.1818 in Corpusty. Do you think John Stiborn,John Stibbings and my John Stebbings could possibly, maybe, perhaps,be the same person.
Hope all that made sense

Hello
I've worked on all the Buxton registers and Archdeacon's Transcripts (ATs) which have to be used for the last decade of the 18th century owing to the poor state of the registers. I have no doubt that the entry to which you refer:

Buxton AT Bapt - 24th April 1791
John son of Richard STIBORN and Susanna his wife, late Susanna WHITEMAN

is your chap whose name is later spelt STEBBINGS. The family had lived in Buxton since at least the middle 17th century and the surname is spelt a variety of ways. I don't have my notes to hand, but I think Richard Bealy STIBORN was bapt 1766, son of John (b1720) who was the son of William.

One of Richard's grandsons, George (so a nephew to your John) married into my own family. His wife Frances Maria being my 2xgt grandfather's sister. How closely are you related to John STEBBINGS/STIBBORN? Are you directly descended?

I have a special interest in Buxton, Lammas, Horstead and Coltishall and separate forums have been created just for them. I'll move this thread over sometime on Sunday.

If you need owt more, please ask

Hi Geoffers
Thank you for reading my Query and for taking the time to reply

John Stebbings is my G,G,G Grandfather His youngest daughter Martha is my ancestor.
On the IGI she is down as Martha STIBBINGS born 1835 in Briston.
Father - John STIBBINGS, Mother - Mary Reynolds
Also on the IGI they have John STIBBINGS marrying Mary Reynolds in Corpusty 1818,
but they have them both from Briston.

On the 1851 census for Briston,John and Mary are down as STEBBINGS
John age 58 from Buxton and Mary age 56 from Corpusty
On the 1841 census for Briston the name looks like STEBBINGS

Martha was married twice, first to William Percifer who was from Stody
I haven't got their marriage certificate yet, then to my G,G,grandfather and
on their marriage certificate she was STEBBINGS.

Do check this with the parish register. The IGI is a useful research aid, but does contain errors, and does not contain the complete record from the register.

Also on the IGI they have John STIBBINGS marrying Mary Reynolds in Corpusty 1818, but they have them both from Briston.
The place of residence given at marriage isn't always correct and does not indicate a place of birth. John Stebbings/Stibbon may well have been living in Briston and recorded that as his place of abode when he married.

By 1861, he is recorded as:

Hills (Nether?) Farm, Briston
John STIBBORN, hd, mar, 69, green grocer, bn Buxton
Mary STIBBORN, wf, mar, 67, bn Corpusty

There is still a STIBBORN family living in Norfolk who are descended from the Buxton Stibborns. I've written to one of them pointing out this message, so you may get a message from her.

Hi Geoffers

Thanks for your help.
I think it's looking pretty good that my John Stebbings is the son of Richard and Susanna from Buxton. So at the moment I think I will pencil them in my tree but go with caution until I am able to see the Parish records.

Mind it's looking good for me if I am a decendant of the Stibborn family as I noticed on the Parish records for Buxton that Richard lived to be over 100 years old. I'm going to have to check that one out.Fingers crossed old age is hereditary

Thanks once again

The registers may be purchased on fiches, from the NRO - or you can hire a film from the mormon church (LDS) record centres.

The entry of Richard's burial appears on (fiche 12), page 76, entry 608.
Richard Bealy STIBBON of Buxton, was buried on Friday 2nd Jan 1857, aged 102.

It's so nice to read that someone isn't taking things for granted and wants to check them out - good for you! Looking up information is fine, but you never know if someone else has made a mistake. Have you looked at the Buxton werb-site? Lots of old photos there of the village.

This Mary Reynolds is related to me, via my Reynolds ancestors in Corpusty. The name was also recorded as Rannolds in the parish records, revealing how the local Norfolk accent made the name sound.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for taking the time to read my query and replying.
I haven't got a definite family for Mary Reynolds yet as I haven't been able to confirm my facts yet by looking at the parish records.

But I think that Mary's father could have been William Reynolds born about 1756 in Corpusty and her mum Margaret Taylor who were married 1779.

Then the next generation back could possibly have been Joseph Reynolds and Elizabeth, but again I'm not to sure of my facts.

On the Stibbons line the only little niggle I have about Richard is that on his death certificate his occupation is Master Shoemaker but on the census he was down as an Ag Lab.

On the Stibbons line the only little niggle I have about Richard is that on his death certificate his occupation is Master Shoemaker but on the census he was down as an Ag Lab.An odd difference. I take it the age and date of death are consistent (i.e. 102 years, buried 2 Jan 1857, so died just before then).

The 1851 census has Richard as a pauper:
HO107/1810 f593 p11
Shultas Corner, Buxton
(this is along Coltishall Road, near where the workhouse once stood).
Richd STIBBONS, hd, widr, 94, pauper, bn Buxton

and next door
HO107/1810 f593 p11
Shultas Corner, Buxton
James STIBBONS, Head, Mar, 38, Farmer Of 60 Acres Employing 1 Lab, Buxton
Eliza STIBBONS, Wife, Mar, 38, Farmers Wife, Lamas
Maria STIBBONS, Daur, Unm, 11, Farmers Daur, Buxton
Rebecca STIBBONS, Daur, , 9, Farmers Daur, Buxton

For Krissie
I'm slowly collating all Buxton records that I can find into a single database, to date I have just on 12,000 entries for the parish. The database is basically an index as I have easy access to facsimile copies of original entries. Anyway, as a test as to how it is going, I've just searched for STIBBORN entries, and variants and pasted below the results. Note that the databse is not yet complete, but these few entries may give you some more ideas

PR=Parish Register, AT=Archdeacon' Transcript, TNA=The National Archives, NRO= Norfolk Record Office, CR=Census, Dir=Directory

B=baptism, MB=marriage banns, M=marriage, d=burial, surv=survey

You should be able to paste the entries into a word processor nd convert it into a table, fairly simply......
