Some friends own a cottage in Langdale and they want to research who lived there. I tried various permutations of addresses but have drawn a blank. I am rather hoping that some one might be able to find the census references for:
HACKET FORGE, LITTLE LANGDALE, AMBLESIDE

Thanks in anticipation

On findmypast, go to the 1911 address search and try entering the following...

Street name: *LANGDALE*
Residential place: KENDAL

This result looks promising --> Forge Little Langdale Ambleside (RG14/31617 SN6)

Alternatively, you can find the 1911 entry above on Ancestry (as well as the 1881 census) by going to the census search form and entering the following in the keyword box (tick exact)...

forge; langdale

There is also a mention of someone who used to live at Hackett Forge here (http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/47006/pages/12195/page.pdf). (Bottom of the page, died in 1976.)

I'd already written this when I saw that olliecat had posted, but I'm going to post it anyway because it might be useful. :smile5:

For most censuses, a place such as Langdale is not going to have any street indexing, so you probably need do the old fashioned thing -- turn the pages and read. :wink5:

You don't say which census you want, or which provider you're using.

Assuming you're using Ancestry, and taking 1881 as an example ...

Go to the 1881 England Census Search page
Using the drop-down menus in Browse This Collection (on the right).
Select the county - Westmorland
Select the civil parish - Langdale
Click the green link to District 9, and start reading.
(You can also view the enumerator's description page to orientate yourself)

By this method, I found a place called The Forge, enumerated next to High Hacket and Low Hacket, on image 25 of 32.
RG11/5207 folio 56 page 25.

Not knowing the area, I have no idea if this is the right place, but it looks feasible.

You should be able to repeat the process for other censuses.

EDIT - I think olliecat and I have found the same place, since the surname is the same in both 1881 and 1911 - DIXON.

Yes! we've found the same place. :smile5:

In case this is any use in determining if it is the right place, here are nearby addresses from the enumerator's list for the 1911 census...

Low Hackett
High Colwith
Low Colwith
