The following data relates to Dr Joseph Albert Goldsmid 1869-1955 and his ancestral line. The information clarifies a number of errors regarding the Goldsmid and Hart relationships identified in several family trees on various sites. The Goldsmid/Hart lines from which Joseph is descended includes his parents- Albert Aaron Goldsmid who married Phobe Hart and Joseph's siblings: Percy Harry Goldsmid 1870-1948; Rebecca Goldsmid 1872-1834; Lionel Goldsmid 1880-1904.
The sources of information regarding the families are taken from several sources including the Australian Newspaper Archives; Australian Electoral Registers; Australian Trade Directories; GRO Records; Australian BMD.
Joseph's father Albert Aaron Goldsmid was the son of Joseph Goldsmid and Celia Jacobs. The Synagogue Scribes records HSM 247 and HSM 175 include two records of the marriage of Joseph Goldsmid- 1 May 1831 father Yechiel HaLevi ( the learned Mr) k/aMichael - Rosemary Lane Minories to Fanny Mordecai - father Moshe Mordecai (Mr) b Benjamin. The second marriage 17 August 1836 Mitre Square Aldgate to Celia Jacobs ( father's Hebrew name Aharon( Mr). Joseph Goldsmid 1811-23 Dec 1865 Corwall Gardens Bayswater Middx descended from Michael Goldsmid 1760-1833 and Sarah ( Phoebe) ? 1764-1861 ( b Norwich Norfolk).

The Old Bailey Online trials record two trials one of which Celia Goldsmid nee Jacobs appear as a witness 9 May 1842 and states she is 'the wife of Joseph Goldsmid and live in Prescot Street Whitechapel'. The second trial involves Joseph Goldsmid ( a victim- trial 12 June 1848 ) in which he refers to himself as 'I am a Birmingham and Sheffield Warehouseman and live in Houndsditch'. Berger' The Jewish Victorian . Genealogical Information from Jewish Newspapers 1861-1870. Robert Boyd Pubs 2004 includes the death of Joseph's mother Phoebe Goldsmid age 97 years ( widow of Michael Goldsmid) at 40 Mansell St on 10.12.1861 at the same address of her sister Mrs E Cohen who had also died 6.12.1861.
On 9.9. 1868 Albert Aaron Goldsmid son of Joseph and Celia had married Phoebe Hart daughter of Aaron Henry Hart and Ann Rebecca Crawcour at Cornwall House Kennington Green ( the house of Aaron and Rebecca).

Albert Aaron Goldsmid became a bankrupt in 1875- The Morning Post ( London) Weds August 18 1875- 300 Coldharbour Lane Brixton Surrey dealer in fancy goods and jewellry. Albert and his family sailed for Australia on the 'Star of India' ( NSW Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists 1828-1896). The family included: Albert 32 Carriage Maker Religion Hebrew - Read/write- Both; Phoebe 32 Read/write-both;Joseph A 8 Read/write -Both; Percy Hy 6 Read; Rebecca E 5 Read/Write- neither. They arrived 5 Nov 1877. The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser ( NSW 1843-1893) -Tues 5 Jan 1886 records the attack and stabbing of Albert by a workman at the workshop of Messrs A A Goldsmid and Co wheelwrights and coachbuilders and gives a brief account of Percy age 14 calling for help for his father who was to recover.

The following data is a brief summary of Albert Aaron Goldsmid and Phoebe Hart's children marriages and deaths:
Percy Harry Goldsmid married twice. The first marriage to his 1st cousin Esther Rebecca Violet Hart ( daughter of Bernard Hart and Rachel Pyke) in 1926 Sydney NSW. Esther ( known as Violet) died 1928 Burwood NSW. Percy re-married in 1930 to Ethel M Orchard. The UK Incoming Passenger Lists 1870-1960 record Percy age 67 pharmacist and Ethel 45 travelling 1st class on the 'Port Wyndham' arriving London 2 Jan 1937. The Australian Electoral Rolls 1930 records Percy and Ethel at 233 Concord Road Northstrathfield NSW and in 1947 at 117 Davidson Avenue N Strathfield. Percy died 21 Oct 1948.Esther ( Violet) had died at 227 Concord Road Northstrathfield 9 Feb 1928 age 38- the newspaper records of her death include references to her aunts Rosina Hart; Mrs Matilda and Miriam Pyke; niece of Mrs Grunwald. Violet is buried Rookwood Jewish Cemetery. Percy died 21 Oct 1948 ( see NSW Probate Records).
Albert Aaron Goldsmid died 21 June 1933 at his home 13 Queen St Croydon NSW age 87. The Sands Directories Sydney and NSW 1858-1933 in 1883 had recorded Albert as a confectioner and coachbuilder at Old South Head Road Paddinton NSW and in 1930 he was an estate agent at 11 Queen St Croydon NSW ( Australian Electoral Rolls 1903-1980).
Rebecca Goldsmid married Joseph Henry Salmon( 1875-18 Dec1952) in 1900 Burowa NSW. Rebecca died in 1934 and Probate was left to her husband and son Horace Abraham Salmon of Charles St Ryde.
Lionel Goldsmid 1880- died 1904** The entries for Lionel's death are interesting. On one pay site The Australia Death Index gives Lionel's death place as Ran AH Victoria age 25 registration year 1933 and estimated birth year abt 1908. However, The Sydney Morning Herald Sat 14 April 1906 includes memorial messages for Lionel's death from his parents; his wife and daughter and sibling Reca ( Rebecca) Salmon; brother in law of Ruby and Sydney Barnett. Importantly, the messages refer to his death in Melbourne on 14 April 1904 age 24. There is a further twist because in 1934 Lionel's daughter Edna was granted probate in her father's will.

The Sydney Morning Herald Mon 15 Oct 1934 Supreme Court of NSW gave Probate Jurisdiction in the estate of Lionel Goldsmid late of Melbourne in the State of Victoria, shop keeper deceased interstate. Admin of the estate granted to Edna Phoebe Morris thev daughter of the deceased. Edna Phoebe Goldsmid 1903-1977 married Ernest Morris.

To complete another part of the Goldsmid line, Albert Aaron Goldsmid's mother Celia had died Jan 9 1888 at 81 Lancaster Road Notting Hill, London. Albert died in 1933 and there are newspaper references to his sister in law Rosina Hart and grandchildren Edna, Morris and great grandchildren Frances,Lionel and June ( no surname).

Joseph Albert Goldsmid married Martha Evans 1870-1950. They had two children Phoebe Lois 1896-1963 and Geoffrey Albert 1902-1977. There are living children of Geoffrey who was a solicitor. Joseph Albert Goldsmid died 6 August 1955 Queensland.
Horace Abraham Salmon married Ethel Mawdsley 1941 Chatswood NSW.
