What is your thinking on the third name of Lewis Robert Michell? It might be a Cornish name as that is where his father Penry Hamilton Edwards Michell originated. This baptism took place in Grahamstown, South Africa. I am not interested in the family per se, just trying to get my transcription of the Grahamstown baptisms as accurate as possible.

Hi Sue,

Could be collorryan

Thanks, Lizzy, I think you are right. I have googled this and there are lots of references to Michells of Collorian in Cornwall, with Colloryan as an alternative spelling.

I think you're spot on, Lizzy: there's a mention on a tennis forum of Lewis Robert Collorryan Michell's wife:

Thanks. I had found his marriage on the GRO but of course he was only down as Lewis R.C. and I wasn't so altruistic in my transcriptions that I would buy the certificate

Here's another from the same register. I have the godparents/sponsors as Godparents K.H. Gillespie, G.A. Moss, E.C.F. Gillespie, Proxies. Louisa Carlisle White, Louisa Carlisle Curran & The Father, but I can't make out the word that looks a bit like Politics against the last two names. Doubtless I am missing something obvious, but it's been a trying week!

Do you mean what is written just to the left of 'The Father', Sue? Could it be the initials of the minister (R.G.N. or R.G.M.?) ??

P.S. not sure about the middle letter now . . . it's quite different from the 'G' in Gillespie.

|bowdown| Brilliant! When blown up large it could indeed be RGM (for the cleric Robert G Mullins). Normally the cleric would initial changes of date or spelling, so I'm not totally sure what he was initialling here, but I think I will just put a note in the Transcriber's Note box to say that's what he did  As he had bracketed one lot of names with Proxies I thought the other three would be Present, but couldn't make the word into anything like that!

The godparents' names seem to have been added as something of an afterthought, so perhaps he's initialling that alteration?
