GRACE HANSON NEE HART 1861-1926

This post identifies the ancestry of Grace Hart 1861-1926 who married William Henry Hanson 1856-1927. Grace died 6 November 1926 105 Park Street Collingwood Victoria Australia. There are several family trees which contain details of her marriage and children but none provide full details of her family origins which derive from two Anglo Jewish families the Hart and Crawcour. Grace was the youngest daughter of Aaron Henry Hart 1809- 7 March 1887 and Ann Rebecca Crawcour 1821-1 Dec 1867 ( my 3x great grandparents). Grace emigrated to Australia and married William Henry Hanson.
Aaron's parents were Henry Hart boot maker 90 Leman St died pre 1841 census and Phoebe Myers 1786-14 April 1869. Henry's father was Jacob Tsebi Hirsch. Phoebe's parents were Jacob Myers and Eve ? Eve died 1844 age 91 at 62 Leman Street
Henry and Phoebe were married Hambro Synagogue 7 Feb 1808. Their children included: John; Aaron;Bella; Moss;Napthali;Julia; Sarah;Caroline;Leah. The family were living in 1841 at 62 Leman Street and in 1851 at 156 Houndsditch.
The siblings of Grace were: Amelia; Ann; Phoebe;Henry;Eve; Gertrude;Flora; Rosina; Napthali Asher;Bernard
Phoebe, Henry,Rosina, Bernard emigrated to Australia.

The Australian Death Certificate of Grace Hanson nee Hart for the District of Collingwood Victoria dated 6 Nov 1926 105 Park Street City of Collingwood records her age as 65 and cause of death carcinoma of the stomach to hernia and cardiac failure- 4 mths and 1 and a half hours. Her parents are named as Henry Aaron Hart Boot manufacturer and mother Rebecca Croker ( Nb The names are in fact incorrect- her mother's maiden name was CRAWCOUR and her father Aaron Henry Hart). The informant was her son Percy Hanson 34 Fitzroy St Fitzroy. Grace's birth address was Kennington Oval Surrey England ( see 1861 census for confirmation). It was recorded as unknown how long Grace had been in Australia however, The NSW Australia Assisted Immigrant Passenger list 1828-1896 records Grace Hart age 23 single woman domestic born Middx religion J ( Jewish?). Literacy- able to read or write Yes. Ship SS Cambodia arrival date 4 April 1884. Another records indicates her working for Mrs Goldsmidt with a number 31. This appears to be her sister Phoebe Hart who was married to Albert Aaron Goldsmid ( the Goldsmid family had also emigtrated as assisted passengers to NSW arriving 5 Nov 1877 on the Star of India).
Grace was married in Queensland to William Henry Hanson at the age of 25. Their children were: William 35;Albert dead; Grace dead;Walter dead; Percy 26;Rebecca 22;Joseph 20.

Some time ago I posted data on Grace Hanson nee Hart daughter of Aaron Hart and Rebecca Crawcour but was unaware of her burial details. Additional newspaper articles ( see Australian Newspaper Archives- Trove collection online) recorded her funeral- "The Friends of the late Grace Hanson are respectfully invited to follow her remains to the place of internment the Coburg General Cemetery. The funeral is to leave her residence 105 Park Street Abbotsford". The Age Melbourne Monday 8 Nov 1926
Victoria Records- Wills and Probate Grace Hanson File 212/261 Abbotsford died 6 Nov 1926

I am unaware if the burial was a Jewish one but the layout of the Cemetery and the denominations listed suggest it was not.
The siblings of Grace who were still alive in 1926 were Bernard, Rosina ( possibly Napthali aka Asher), Amelia the eldest child and my 2x great grandmother who died in 1928 Hove. Rosina died in 1942 NSW and Bernard died in 1929. Henry, Eva, Flora, Phoebe had died much earlier. Of the others Samuel and Arthur I have no data.
Bernard, Rosina, Phoebe, Henry are buried in Rookwood Jewish Cemetery Sydney NSW. Amelia is buried in the Jewish Section Brighton/Hove.

Flora and Eva are buried in Honolulu. I have no data on the other siblings deaths. Grace, Henry, Napthali, Eva married non Jews.

The Tombstone photographs for the grandparents of Grace Hart can be seen on Cemetery Scribes website - see Phoebe MYERS ( married name Hart) ID 1786 1869 ID 6893 buried Lauriston Road Jewish Cemetery. Her husband Henry Hart 1786-1833 ( Tsebi Hirsh b Baruch b Jacob) is buried adjacent to his wife Phoebe. The death of Henry Hanson reported in at least 2 Newspapers- "Fatal Driving Accident"- Mr Henry Hanson well known butcher of Heathcote...well advanced in years was one of the oldest residents of Heathcote having arrived in 1853. He carried on a successful butchering business for over 40 years...Bendigo Advertiser Mon 8 May 1905. The articles included the cause of his fatal injuries caused when his gig turned over. His wife had predeceased him.

In earlier posts on this thread I had forgotten to add Gertrude Hart 1849-1913 sister of Grace. Gertrude married Louis COURLANDER and I have posted on the Courlander/Hart lines on earlier threads. Gertrude died in Croydon England.

Constance Hart granddaughter is the daughter of Amelia Hart and Henry Chapman Hart my 2x great grandparents. Constance married Albert Santa Maria and settled in Rome Italy- I have posted on this line but have very few details and no knowledge of their children - there may have been 5 or what happened to the family during WW2.

By 1882 Aaron and his brother John who had been partners in what once had been a successful shoe and boot manufacturing business ( see 1851 Census for the number of people they employed over 150 individuals) were declared bankrupts.
Aaron died in 1887.

They remained at same address until 1977 with Raymond Clifford Hanson their son electrical fitter 1949 and also by 1954 Alice Edna Hanson. The couple were living alone by 1963 or earlier.

Graham and others
The relationship between Grace Hanson nee Hart and existing Crawcour lines in Australia and South Africa is very close. This is because Isaac Crawcour 1815-1886 who married Esther Cashmore 1816-1883 was the son of David Crawcour 1791-1882 and Amelia Barnes c 1792-1870. Isaac and Esther settled in Australia and their descendants still remain. As a re-cap David Crawcour 1791-1887 was the father of Ann Rebecca Crawcour 1821-1867 who married Aaron Hart 1809-1887- they are the parents of Grace.
The South African Crawcour also descend from David Crawcour 1791-1882.
In addition, Amelia Hart daughter of Aaron Hart and Ann Rebecca Crawcour married Henry Chapman Hart. Henry was the son of John Hart and Elizabeth Jacobs ( there is a significant website and data base on the Jacobs lines set up by one of my Jacobs cousins). Catherine Hart aka Kate a sister of Henry Chapman Hart married Abraham Crawcour and I have posted on the further relationship between this line and the Hart/Crawcour.

Aaron Crawcour aka Charles Laurance brother of Ann Rebecca Hart nee Crawcour is buried in Melbourne General Cemetery 1901. I have posted on Aaron Crawcour -convict in some detail.
Flora Hart sister of Grace married Lewis Levey and died in Honolulu there are descendants of this line ( I have posted a lot on Flora and Lewis) similarly Eve aka Eva sister of Grace also married and settled in Honolulu ( I have posted on her marriage and other data).
With regard to the other siblings of Grace readers can see a wide range of data posted by me on marriages, descendants etc on each individual.

I hope this very brief summary helps connect those researchers who descend from these lines with the opportunity to link further with living distant or closer cousins.

In post 5 of this thread I had posted on Grace Hanson nee HART daughter of Aaron Hart and Ann Rebecca Crawcour burial. The Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery Melbourne online records show Grace HANSEN Service date of Burial 08/11/1926 Denomination Methodist. The surname spelling is incorrect and should read HANSON. In addition, Grace was born a Jew and her maternal line is Jewish and not Methodist.
Her brother Napthali Asher Hart is aka Arthur Robert Hart as my recent postings have confirmed. He also called himself a Wesleyan on joining the Army Medical Corp but again his maternal and paternal roots are Jewish and the descendants of Grace on from her and her maternal line have Jewish roots.

The reason for the different surname spelling for the two Grace -mother and daughter HANSEN and William Henry HANSON the father and husband of Grace Hanson nee HART is not known.
