Does anybody no anything about the people, rather than the companies, who made the aeroplanes of the day?

Would these craftmen have been in a protected occupation and been civilians or would they have joined up and been given jobs associated with their trade?

My grandfather, Arthur HANDS, a master carpenter, built aeroplanes in Levenshulme, South Manchester. To make sure they were built properley, and didn't fold up, he went up with the test pilots.

Any clues, hints or knowledge of record deposits would be a help.

Sorry, don't know the answer, but if no one else can help, you might try contacting the RAF museum

to see if they know of any sources of information to assist.
