Hello.
Is there any way in which you can find out which school your ancestors went to ?

I think that a lot depends upon where you are looking - and when.

For instance, many of my ancestors lived in villages and so there was not really much option as to which school they went to because it was the closest one. I have followed this through by checking school records held by the local Records Office or Archives.

In towns, there were also many independent private schools, but records might still be held by the local Archives.

Thank you both for your replies. My ancestors were from villages and small towns, so may have some luck.

Susan.

You'll find that county directories are an initial help in identifying schools.

This Research Guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/elementary-education.htm) may be useful to provide some top level background on organisation and history. It's useful, at least, to understand the difference between "National Schools" and "British Schools".

Most of your ancestors (even if you haven't identified them yet) wouldn't have attended any school!
