For whoever may be looking for Mary Jane Smith born 1847 Liskeard Cornwall, this is my gg grandfathers sisters family.

Mary Simpkins born 1820 Bathwick Somerset & James Smith born 1821 Box Wilts married in Box Wiltshire 1840, he was a Land agent for GWR, son Robert was born 1844 Box and Thomas born 1849 Box.

The Smith family were still in Box Wiltshire in 1851 but by 1861 they had disappeared. I have found no trace of them but this is before the 1861 and 1871 censes lookups.

If you have Mary Jane in your tree I would be pleased to hear from you. Or if you can find them on the 61 & 71 census that will be great.

Oh my G you have found them for me. Well I never thought I would find them. I wonder where Robert and Thomas are. Robert could be working away from home but Thomas I would have thought to young. I will look for a birth of one of the children after leaving Box that will tell me if you have found the right family but I do believe you have thank you so much.

We have been doing the family tree for 5 years and keep trying to hunt them different ways never thought they would have gone back to Liskeard.

The only trouble is there are so many James and Mary's, Mary was born in Bathwick, Bath Somerset so I wonder why she didn't say unless its another Mary he married and our Mary died.

I did get Mary Jane's christening about 2 years ago made my husband do a detour while we were holidaying in our favourate place in Cornwall. Wish we were there this week.

Thank you so much again.

Hi Irene,

Could not find Robert Smith at all in 1861 using a two year time frame from 1844 for his birth.

Searched for Thomas born in Box 1849 using a two year time frame and this popped up:

County/Island: Wiltshire
Country: England

Source information: RG9/1281
Registration district: Chippenham
Sub-registration district: Corsham
ED, institution, or vessel: 3

I doubt this is what you have been chasing but are you sure the Thomas you have is not connected to this family?

Here is my dilemma

I have a Mary Simpkins born Bathwick 1820 who married James Smith in Box Wiltshire 1840, they have two sons, 1 daughter, Robert 1844 born Box Wilts, Mary Jane 1847 born Liskeard and Thomas 1849 Box Wilts.

I have them in Box 1851. I had lost them after 1851, but Procat found what I thought was the family in Liskeard Cornwall 1861, 1871.

The birth of Mary Jane is correct for my Mary. More children after 1854 shows that the mother is a Mary Bray 6 years younger than my Mary.

In 1861 Procat found James, Mary, Mary Jane, William James etc in Liskeard. Mary Jane is not with them in 1871. On the census James is a Labourer but on the birth cert. he is, Railway Servant (christening in Liskeard he is Railway agent) in 1847, Inspector of masons ?? on the Railway in 1854, Railway Inspector in 1860. Box is known for their stones, and masons are in the family.

What has happened to my Mary born Bathwick, Robert 1844 & Thomas 1849. I have found several deaths, but ones I am interested in is Mar qtr 1852 in Liskeard and Dec qtr 1852 Liskeard, June qtr 1852 Bath.

If Mary has died then it must be between April 1851 when the census was taken and July 1854 when William James was born. I have not been able to find a marriage for Mary Bray to James Smith between these years yet. Could Mary Bray have been married before.

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Irene
