Anyone interested in tracing their early modern ancestors, might find this new website, Hearth Tax Online, useful:

It contains full transcripts of hearth tax returns from the 17th Century as well as maps and statisitcs.
Currently, there are transcripts for the counties of Durham, Kent, Surrey and Yorkshire West Riding but it is regularly updated and, when i e-mailed them, they said that lists for London and Middx, Yorkshire East Riding, Yorkshire North riding and Northamptonshire will be uploaded soon.
Best of all, it is free to access!! every little helps...
