I have been looking into George James and Ann "Colvedge" (sp) who moved to Montreal, Quebec sometime before the mid-1850's as one of their daughters was born in Montreal in 1856.

"Colvedge" is what Ann's surname looks like on her death record. It also says she is a native of Northamptonshire.

Going through the free BMD records on line for the 1840's, I located a marriage record for Mar 1842 Brackley that has a Collenridge surname. Looking at the death record once again, I am now thinking that that is probably the correct surname.

My problem is, before I order the record, would somebody be able to tell me if Ann Collenridge married George James? There are 3 women and 3 men listed in that index, but it doesn't say who matched up with whom.

Thanks in advance, Dan

According to family search.

groom's name: George James
bride's name: Ann Collenridge
marriage date: 27 Feb 1842
marriage place: Brackley, Northamptonshire, England
groom's father's name: Joseph James
bride's father's name: Thomas Collenridge
record title: England Marriages, 1538–1973

Hope that helps. Wonder if they are in the 1851 census.

Hi Dan

The marriage is on the IGI, which says that George James did indeed marry Ann Collenridge (dau. of Thomas), at Brackley, on 27 Feb 1842.

P.S. olliecat's too quick for me!

There is an Ann COLLINGRIGE in the 1841 census in Brackley, age about 20. There is also a 65 year old Thomas and a 60 year old Elizabeth in the household as well as a 1 year old Hannah.

1841: HO107 Piece: 804 Book/Folio: 3/21 Page: 34 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)

There is also a possible sighting of George and Ann James with four children in 1851. However - need to check them out first, to see if they are in the 1861 census or not.

Do you have approximate birth dates for your George and Ann?

That is so cool. Thanks so much. Now if I can confirm that they had a daughter named Elizabeth Sarah, its almost a sure thing.

Thanks again. It is much appreciated.

Thank you so much. I only have approximate birth dates for George. According to the 1871 Canadian Census, he was born in 1811. The 1861 Canadian Census show's he was born in 1816. One of his daughter's, Elizabeth Sarah, is my link to George James. So now I need to confirm Elizabeth's parents and I've solved a huge piece of my very large puzzle.

Thanks again, Dan

My link to George and Ann is that they had a daughter named Elizabeth. One of Elizabeth's daughers' (her name was Ann) baptism records show a witness named William James.

So, the 1851 Census you speak of looks pretty good so far.

The 1861 Canadian Census only shows George, a daughter Marie (born in Canada), and Elizabeth (born in England). Elizabeth was listed as 17 years old at the time.

The children of George and Ann (including the Elizabeth that Jellylegs found on FreeRED), ...

Christened at Brackley...

Elizabeth James bap. 16 Jan 1843

William Thomas James bap. 29 Jan 1845

Christened at Syresham ...

John James bap. 17 Oct 1848 (did he die before 1851?)

Sarah Ann James bap. 09 Mar 1851

(from family search)

I suspect that Hannah, born abt 1839, may have been an illegitimate child of Ann.

Thanks Jellylegs! Most, most appreciated.

Its taken me many, many years of digging to find Elizabeth's parents as her marriage record didn't list any. And then in one day find her parents and her birth records is awesome.
