I am looking for any information re John HUNT and his wife Martha BUSHNELL who married c 1815 and lived at Headington Quarry.Oxford

Martha was widowed by 1841 and occupation laundress.
By later census she had properties for rent. How come the change in fortune?

Looking for :
Death of John HUNT pre 1841
John HUNT's occupation
Was Martha a widow when she married?

Any help appreciated!

Hi Judy ...

Have found your marriage on the OFHS's Marriage Index:

07 SEP 1815 - John HUNT (w) to Martha BUSHNALL (w) at Headington

Note that Martha's name is spelt with an "A" and not an "E". (w = widow/er)

And this must be Martha's first marriage (the only BUSHNELL/BUSHNALL+Martha on the index prior to 1815):

05 MAR 1810 - Benjamin BUSHNELL to Martha HEDGES to Headington

Hope this helps!

Pennie

"By later census she had properties for rent. How come the change in fortune?"

How much and what sort of property did she rent out? I see Martha in the 1851 census but I'm not sure I'd interpret it in the same way as you.

Perhaps later censuses are more explicit?

PennieThanks for this Penny! Martha's granddaughter was also a Bushnell with her father's mother still alive so I was beginning to wonder if I was geting everything confused...but no just Bushnells on both sides of the family!

Now to find a burial for Benjamin between 1810 & 1815!
Thanks again for your trouble.

Perhaps later censuses are more explicit?Rate book of 1850 seems to indicate that she had 5 houses , 4 of which she rented out.
1861 Census she is a House Proprieter.

Have you checked for wills which might shed some light on this?

If there's nothing in the PCC. any wills ought to be at Oxfordshire Records Office who might be able to help. Various indexes have also been published but I'm afraid I don't know whether you'd be able to get hold of a copy locally.
