My 3X GGfather was Robert Rowledge. He was the son of Samuel and Ann [nee Woods] and was baptised in Rickmansworth April 8, 1810. I have found baptisms for what I thought, originally, was his 7 siblings. The 1st baptism was William [February 23, 1800] and the others at various dates between 1801 and 1820. In order they were: John [1802], Thomas [1805], Elizabeth [1807], Joseph [1814], David [1816] and Peter [1820].

The 1st to die was William in 1818 in Rickmansworth and it was indicated on this this he was born in 1799.

Given that Samuel and Ann married November 15, 1793 [confirmed by records from 2 sources] it struck me as 'strange' that they waited over 5 years for a 1st child. However, nothing was evident from IGI/Family Search.

Then while 'filling in blanks' I came across a marriage of a Hannah Roulidge [as transcribed] marrying a Thomas Eagles. The marriage was on February 1,1864. Thomas was a Widower and Hannah was a Spinster. Hannah indicated that her father was Samuel and was deceased. Samuel had died in 1844.

This looked promising. Searching in the 1871 census in the general area where they were residing I found an [B]Hannah Eagles with an age 75 [birth year 1796]. She was now a widow

Could this be their 1st child? If so, why can't I find a baptism?

Thanks so much. As usual, I missed a variation on the name - I had used Rowledge/Rowlidge/Rouledge/Roulidge but not the one you did!!!:cuss:

Hi Colin
It wasn't anything clever I did (that would be a turn up for the books) I just put in Hannah Rowledge 1796 and she was the only result I got. Mind you I could go back and do the same thing tomorrow and nothing will show. Many sites do seem to have this idiosyncracy.
