Help - does anyone know where I can get access to the court records for a prisoner sent to Norwich Castle County Prison - he was there in 1881. Nothing came up at the National Archives.

Thank you

Liane

It would depend on which court sent him down - or remanded him prior to conviction.

The NRO has these records (http://www.archives.norfolk.gov.uk/guide/nrops.htm)

TNA has this research guide on Assizes: Criminal trials 1559-1971 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/assizes-criminal-1559-1971.htm) and this guide on Criminals 18th-20th centuries (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/criminals-18th-20th-centuries.htm) - Note in particular section 2 of this guide on criminal registers and that these records may be searched on the pay-per-view site 'ancestry'

Also - try a search of your chap's name using NOAH (http://www.noah.norfolk.gov.uk/QSearch.aspx) just in case he is indexed in one of the linked databases.
