I dont have any info for you. :(

But I do have a James Selley born in Exeter around 1787, possibly married to Elizabeth, and with 2 daughters Elizabeth and Jane Selley.

Jane was supposedly born in 1828 according to the age she gave on the census records, and she was consistant, but I cant find any birth record for her. I can however find birth records for 2 other Jane Selleys born in 1819 & 1821.

Do you have any James Selley with a daughter named Jane?
Jane was my gt gt grandmother.

sorry no luck on the 1851 Census for Devon, no Henry Selley of any age. could ask on the Dorset forum for a look up in case his family had already moved over the border.

Hi Kaye,

No help any earlier, but here is the 1871 info, in Charminster Dorset:

Henry Sealey, Head, 28, Gardener, Devon Exeter
Sarah, Wife, 28, ___, Dorset Bridport
James, Son, 5, do. Burton (or Buston?) Bradstock
Sarah, Daur, 2, do. Forston
(RG10/2013, F 40, P 38)

The SEALEY is quite clear, but it does seem to be the right family. Does the occupation match up?

Peggy,

Ages and occupation match up. I have Henry born in st thomas oxeter, Devon (according to 1891) and Exeter (1881, 1901). Sarah born west allington bridport, Dorset (1891) or Blandford, Dorset (1881). I don't know about James but daughter Sarah is the right age and it looks like born in Porston but is likely Forston (1881).

I have posted a query on some Dorset groups too.

Thanks for your help.

Kaye

Just a suggestion try looking at ZELLEY as well, the Devon accent does tend to make an S sound like a Z sometimes.

Thanks, Terry. A while back, Brian Zelley invited me to join his ZELLEY group and he had posted some information about my SELLEY family on a Dorset forum. He has been very helpful. I've made a list of possible spellings after talking with a few people.

On the 1851 census, there is a Henry SELLEY aged 8 in the St Thomas Union Workhouse (in St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter) with his widowed mother Ann aged 32 (a servant) b in Kenn, Devon. Also brother Richard aged 10.

Source information: HO107/1867

On the 1861 census, there is an Ann SELLEY aged 44 but born in Kenn - again in the workhouse, this time with a daughter Susan aged 4. Ann is shown as unmarried.

Source information: RG9/1389
Registration district: St Thomas
Sub-registration district: St Thomas
ED, institution, or vessel: St Thomas Union Workhouse
Folio: 118
Page: 3
Household schedule number: 1

I have therefore had another look at the 1851, as I thought it was a W for widow, but it could easlily be a U with a long 'tail'.

On the IGI there are 2 Ann SELLEYs b in Kenn - one in 1814 and one in 1816.

I realise that this is now 4 years later but I have found that my Selleys in Exeter were actually SULLY's. You might want to look into that name.
