Hello,

The 1861 census lists George JARVIS b circa 1838 as resident at Station Cookham and his occupation as Gate keeper.
I believe that he worked the crossing gates at the station. He would have been about 23 married with 3 children. Is it possible that he lived in a cottage provided by the railway company ?
I think that Cookham is on the GWR line from Maidenhead to Marlow.
I think that the GWR kept detailed staff records are these available on cd? or could some kind person do a look up for me? I note from a previous post that some railway records are in TNA.

Originally the Wycombe Railway Co. Taken over by GWR on 1867.

This Research Guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=124) has details of railway staff records. You have to visit the National Archives to view them.

Also see the National Register of Archives (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/simpleSearch.asp?subjectType=O) to check for any other repositories that may hold railway records.

Thanks Peter,
I checked Wycombe Railway Co. on TNA but they dont seem to have staff records. I did find some interesting stuff about the line on Wikipedia. I'll keep looking.

I wouldn't confine yourself to the Wycombe Railway Co. When they were taken over many if not most of their records would have transferred to GWR. I think the GWR files would be the place to look.

Hi Might be an idea to contact the people at Swindon see thread named GWR, although their complete staff records seem to be later than these dates, they may know of other sources besides Kew.
There is also the GWR museum in Swindon: steam-museum.org.uk/steam/steam2007-archive-introduction-2.htm
