Is there a site where I can view wills online?

Hi there,

Have a read of Geoffers' post (number 2) in this thread (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?53450-Idiots-Guide-To-Wills). I have downloaded a couple of wills of various "greats" from the TNA website.

Meanwhile, I am sliding this thread over to the Wills forum. :smile5:

There are 1,716 Transcripts/Extracts with 22 Inventories from Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Kent, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Sussex on the Surrey Plus (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engsurry/index.shtml)wills site, all submitted by volunteers. There are other sites around, for example for specific villages or areas, where other volunteers have submitted transcripts, usually just a few - you will need to search for the particular areas that you're interested in. Many county record offices have indexes to wills, eg, Wiltshire and Buckinghamshire, with some you are able to download a copy for a fee.

What areas and dates are you interested in? Tell us more and someone might well be able to give more detailed advice.

Hi Colin

Thanks for that info. The two wills that I am interested in are of George Johnson of Llanrhydd Denbighshire,(died Kensington London 1860) I'm certain his will had been held in Chester as he had been the partner in a lawfirm there some years earlier (Potts & Johnson).
The other will is much more recent so not sure if UK law allows access to it? Bertie Cecil Johnson died 1950, also of Llanrhydd Hall Denbighshire (death was registered in Ruthin - don't know if his will was also held in Chester or in Ruthin

If you could help direct me to where and if I would be able to view the contents of these wills, that would be great!

regards
Debby

Hello Debby

Unless someone has made a transcription and posted it online (the chances are very slim, I would think) then the will is not available to view. All wills from 1858 are held centrally and you can buy a copy for £5, see Geoffers' post (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?53450-Idiots-Guide-To-Wills&p=346962&viewfull=1#post346962) in the thread mentioned in post 2 above. Anyone can buy a copy of any will once it has been proved.

Colin
