Hello, I am trying to find the Birth of my great grandmother Mary McKenna. She was supposedly born 1855 in Glasgow to parents Alexander McKenna and Mary Anne Copeland. I have been unable to find her in Scotland. The earliest record I have is a marriage to a John Turner in Australia in May 1876. The Marriage Certificate states Birthplace as Glasgow Scotland.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You,
Jen

Hello Hugh
Thank you for the reply.

The first one - Marriage is correct but the second one is not. She died in 1900 at Hughenden Queensland under the name of Mary Bourne, which was her second husband. She had 3 children with her second husband (Bourne) then she had my grand mother Mary Sarah with a James Elliott (ref 484A) in 1881 aged 25.

No worries Jen, I had doubts about the Auburn one, are you convinced that she was born in Glasgow.
Hugh.

Hugh,

Glasgow is what is stated on her Marriage Certificate. Her Death Certificate (1900) states Scotland 27 years in Queensland and her daughters Australian Birth Certificate states Mary was born in Glasgow Scotland. That is all I have to go on, so I am assuming Scotland.

Hugh,

I have found an Alexander McKenna in the 1851 Scotland Census with a wife listed as Mary, I wonder if this could be my Mary's parents and she was born about 4 years after the Census. I cannot find the family in the 1861 Census.

Jen,
Where was that 1851 census address that you found, as that might give a hint as to roughly where she was born.
Hugh.

Sorry Jen, I can't find them in the IGI, you might need someone with access to Scotland's people or Ancestry.
Hugh.

The family you've got your eye on in 1851 Scotland are Catholic. The births/baptisms of both of their sons (Felix and Peter/Patrick) are recorded in the Catholic births of St. Johns Glasgow as found on scotlandspeople. Mum's maiden name is listed as CARNE on one and CARLE on the other. Not sure that helps your cause any!!!

Best wishes
Jean

Jean

Thank you for that information. I know Mary and her husband married in a Roman Catholic church. I will check out those names you gave me.

Thanks

Jenny
