I was wondering if anyone could possibly please advise me how I can find out which regiment one of my ancestors belonged to.

His name was Henry Ashmore, born Kidderminster in 1837 ("horsekeeper").

He married Catherine from Ireland.

I presume he was in the military, or connected with it as hiis children were born in military areas:

Edward 1861 in Chatham
Henry 1867 in Aldershot
Alexander Phillip in 1870 in The Curragh Camp, Ireland.

With thanks for any assistance whatsoever.

Wendy

First thing I'd try is to search the index to Regimental Registers of Births 1761-1924 to see if the births are included there. The index includes the father's regiment. The index can be searched online at 1837 online

I had a look and one of the children seems to be there:

ASHMORE Henry J. Aldershot. 1866. ASC C&T, vol 639 page 14

So his dad was in the Army Service Corps. But this is just my transcription and I may have made an error, so you should double check the entry for yourself.

Next thing is to order the certificate which should give his rank and number.

After that, try the Soldiers' Documents at Kew and maybe the 1861 census for Chatham.

Hi Wendy,

I haven't spotted them on any census before 1881. I notice that it shows Alexander born Aldershot. I guess you have other info?

Just in case you don't have it, the 1891, in Fulham (RG12/46, Folio 46, Page 32) shows Henry, Head, Wid, 54, Horsekeeper, with son Henry 24 also Horsekeeper, and young Henry's wife Hannah & son Henry age 6mo.

Geoffers,

This may not be of any help but my g granddad was in the Zulu war (proven) he was in the Buffs, they were in Ireland around 1871 and he joined in early 1871 in Westminster even though he was from Wilts.

Can anyone explain how I search for a British Army marriage? My grandparents' marriage doesn't appear under BMDs and it was suggested to me by a knowledgable person on this site that it may wll be recorded in British Army records as an Army marriage. It would have been about 1909 between James Bradley and Mary Harrington (both from Ireland). My father was born in 1911 at Aldershot.
I'd be grateful for any further advice.
Thanks Mary:confused:
