I am tracing one of the many BARRETT families in the Herefordshire region.

The base Patriarch is FRANCIS BARRETT who is buried in ST Mary's Church Grave yard BURGHILL with his wife CATHERINE BARRETT (Nee Pritchard) Francis was buried in 1879 (sometimes listed as 1875 due to a transcription error of the engraving on his tombstone)
Catherine was buried in 1837

One of their sons - Thomas Barrett married an Esther Slack and later migrated to Australia but that link is in the Australian Forum.

In this Forum I am tracing backwards from Francis and Catherine as far as I can go.

Early research suggests that Francis was born on Ross (on wye) in 1791
I would like to confirm this and other data with somebody if possible

Hi Eagle
1871 census has a Francis Barrett 73 widower not related to people, boarder
birthplace is transcribed as Robb, its actually the double ff short for ss in those days.
He was born in Ross for sure.

All the best

Thank you so much for this - I will work on it to see what links relate.

Thank you - somebody else recently mentioned a possible link with a census record from 1851 so I think that I am on the right track.

There are these two marriages shown on the Herefordshire Marriage Index:

12 August 1788 at Ross Francis BARRETT & Mary SHADGETT
18 January 1818 at Hereford St John Francis BARRETT & Catherine PRITCHARD by Licence, Francis of All Saints Hereford

Census records indicate Francis's birthdate as anywhere between 1791 & 1798 but always at Ross. What may also be of interest to you is a further marriage on the Index at Hereford Cathedral on 24 June 1742 of a Francis BARRETT of Woolhope and a Hannah RAVENHILL of Much Marcle - perhaps something to bear in mind given the forenames of your ancestors.

Given that Francis was in Burghill in the 1841 census record together with presumably his children Ann 20, Thomas 20, Henry 15 and Francis 13, there is a burial record at Burgill on the Burial Index for a Catherine BARRETT on 9 February 1837, aged 47, of Burghill (you might already have this, but in case not .....).

I am quite interested in this information - the 1841 census - I do not have it.
A photograph of Catherine's Gravestone kindly sent to me from the UK (I am in Australia) shows an inscription date of Feb 2nd - so it is interesting that the record shows the 9th of Feb - another relative also gave me 2 feb 1837 as the burial/death date of Catherine.

Thank you for this new information.
