I found my gt grandmother in 1871 living in Dumfries Scotland. by 1881 the family had moved to lancashire but there is no trace of her (margaret Grant Toolan) or of her sister Janet. Margaret reappears in 1889 when she married my gt grandfather William Forse of Exeter. Her address on the certificate is Bruton St London where she worked for General Sir Redvers Buller. Presumably she travelled to his Devon estates where she met my grandfather. I am still trying to fill in the missing years. Did the gentry keep records of the staff they employed? How did they recruit staff - did the General have connections North of the border or Lancashire? Any hints welcome. Thanks.

Dear Terry,
Sorry for being thick but what does 'Em'ee' actually signify? Emigree? Employee?
Many thanks.

The 1891 census noted if someone was 'employer', 'employee' or 'neither employer nor employed'.

I'd suggest that this in an abbreviation for employee.

Geoffers,
It seems that, once again, I am in your debt. Many thanks!
