listed below are 3 illnesses my grt grandfather suffered whilst in the amy in 1878. the first 2 whilst seving a 2 year stint in Gibraltar.

column 1 = the illness
column 2 = days duration of illness
column 3 = what they did to cure it.
column 4 = what caused the infection

Can't do it all, but here is some of it,
Syph. ?????treated with ??? and iodide pol?? cause contagion.
Inf. Glands (????) treated with incision?, poultice, cause???
Abscess (penis) treated with poultice and ??? dressing, cause as in second.

Syph is short for syphilis. Possibly he had a syphilitic ulcer and got secondarily infected lymph nodes and an abscess developed on the penis. THe initial ulcer was probably found there.

I'm sorry I can't help you with The decyphering of your G Grandfathers illnesses, but your reply has made me laugh so much.

I can sympathise with him 100%. I had a creeping abscess on me bum at Christmas and had to have emergency surgery to excise it in hospital. Having it packed and dressed everyday for 2 weeks was no fun. Not being able to sit down wasn’t much fun either.:cryin:

Where he had it was much worse.:yikes:

P.s. mine wasn’t caused by syphilis I hasten to add.:biggrin:
