Could anyone tell me if there may have been a coroner's inquest into a death, even though one is not mentioned on a death certificate from 1948.
If so who would I need to contact?

I would have thought that it would have been mentioned on the death certificate, but someone with more knowledge in this area may be able to confirm - or not!
However, have a read of section 2, paragraph 4 onwards of this TNA Research Guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=175), which should answer the second part of your question.

Perfect timing for that Jan, I was searching for inquest information earlier today for 1951-1952. Now I know the answer to my question.

No. If there was an inquest, it will be noted on the death certificate.
