I received this birth cert today for my Great-Grandmother:

Margaret Ann Butson, born 25 July 1871 - Toft Hill, County Durham
Father: Thomas Butson - Coal miner
Mother: Margaret Butson formerly Shackleton

Thomas Butson died in 1874, aged 38.
Margaret Butson (Shackleton) then married Joseph Orton in 1876

Can anyone help find a marriage for Margaret Shackleton and Thomas Butson, please?

Sorry Ronone I can't find a marriage for Margaret Shackleton and Thomas. I went back and started 1855. Isabella Alice Butson was born in Burnley 1862 so I gave a bit of leeway. The only Thomas Burston marrying a Margaret I could spot was in Reeth, North Riding Yorkshire in June 1/4 1859 But it was Margaret Cherry. Sorry.
PS Hi Warncoort. Did you find the partners for the Elizabeth and Thomas Butson that are the only two showing up on FreeBMD for that page?

Hi, warncoort and verclare

I checked that marriage on the County Durham wesite, it seems this pair married each other:
BUTSON Thomas - 1856 Durham Western
BUTSON Elizabeth - 1856 Durham Western

Thanks for trying.

According to the census Margaret was born circa 1845.

I too have been 'wayback' & trying for possible 'other marriages 'for Margaret before she marriied Thomas.
Warncoorts find had me wondering if Margaret was originally an Elizabeth?
She's very hard to find on 1851-1861 censuses.

Thomas and Elizabeth - married 1856 are here 1871 RG10/ 4155/ 168 / 38 They are in Colne which is where Margaret says she was born in the 1871 census so I think there is a tie in but Elizabeth is not Margaret.
I think Elizabeth is the dau of Christopher Butson and there are sisters Margaret and Alice. 1851 HO107/2380/234/15
Census TNA copyright.

This is a Margaret age 8 with parents Parker and Anna brother James, sister Christianna. They are living in Burnley which is where margaret's daughter Isabell (1871 census) was born. There is one other but born and living Great Harwood.
Do you have the marriage cert for Margaret and Joseph Orton?
I am getting lots of info but none leading me to a marriage for Margaret and Thomas.

I checked that marriage on the County Durham wesite, it seems this pair married each other:
BUTSON Thomas - 1856 Durham Western
BUTSON Elizabeth - 1856 Durham Western
According to the census Margaret was born circa 1845.

1871 RG10/4155/168/38
Colne lancashire
Thomas Butson 39
Elizabeth Butson 37
Francis Garth 13
Elizabeth Alice 9
Thomas William 5

I think the above family is the couple married in Durham 1856. Especially as Elizabeth has a sister Alice

It can't be Margaret as in 1871 RG10/4940/11/15
Durham
Thomas Butson 33
Margaret 26
Isabell H dau 9

Does that seem right?

If Margeret was born in 1845 (and she is consistent with her age) then in 1856 she would have been 11 years old.

Thanks for giving me respite from a " Please help me" night!
Have a great Easter.

Do you have the marriage cert for Margaret and Joseph Orton?
I am getting lots of info but none leading me to a marriage for Margaret and Thomas.

Hi verclare,

I found the marriage on the Durham website which gives:
ORTON Joseph 1876 Durham Western
BUTSON Margaret 1876 Durham Western
SHACKLETON Margaret 1876 Durham Western

I've just ordered that MC (hopefully, I'll get confirmation of Margaret Shackleton's father's name)

Thanks for all the help.

I've tried everything I can think of to find the first marriage of Margaret Shackleton to Thomas Butson (My GG-Grandparents) still no luck.

Hi Ronone
I made a right mess of my last post eh? Excuse? It was getting late.
I also forgot to say that I started trawling through the GRO marriages last night and so far absolutely nothing. Let's hope that the cert you have ordered for Joseph and Margaret casts a little bit of light.
Do you want me to see if I can find out anything more about the entries on ancestry and genesreunited?
