Hello,

As a starting point I had a look on the Family Search website (IGI). However, there does not appear to be a James Thornton listed as being baptised in Northamptonshire. Having said that, the records are not complete and not every parish is listed.

Northamptonshire is a pretty substantial county and, without knowing roughly where in Northamptonshire your chap was born, it is difficult knowing where precisely to look.

Have you found him in any of the censuses? If so, where does it say that he hails from?

Not only is he not on the IGI (yet), but I cannot find him on either the 1841 or 1851 census.
What information have you got on him? I see you are just wanting to know if there was a James Thornton baptised in Northants. Could he have been baptised in a neighbouring county?
There was the family of Thorntons of Brockhall Hall (you can google it) and there still remains Thornton Park in Kingsthorpe of Northampton. Maybe he is related to them?

Sue

The baptism of James THORNTON has not been found.

James is first see in the 1841 UK Census records (HO107/1132/12; Folio: 6; Page: 7) on the same page with the family of William & Rebecca THORNTON (James may not be recognized in Ancestry because the name is really askew…you may find him as “James Thuntur”). William is the oldest child of George & Elizabeth THORNTON. On this same page in the 1841 UK Census is (1) Elizabeth THORNTON [b. 1820/Hanslope, Bucks]…the youngest daughter of George & Elizabeth THORNTON, and (2) William BASELEY (the step-father of William & Elizabeth)…William BASELEY married William’s widowed mother in July 1840 (I have the GRO Marriage Certificate)…the father George THORNTON died in Sept 1836 at age 87 in Stoneton, Northants(I have the image from the Bishop's Transcripts).…he was buried at St. Peter’s in Wormleighton. The GRO Death certificate shows that James died Dec 19, 1841 at age 25 of tuberculosis (aka, "Consumption")…so he was born c1816.

George & Elizabeth THORNTON had three kids in Wolverton, and then four in Hanslope before they moved to Wormleighton and settled permanently…and there are some there to this day!

[B]Baptisms in Wolverton: William (16 Jun 1805); George (Feb 1806 – Feb 1807), and Mary (13 Nov 1808).

Baptisms in Hanslope: John (9 Nov 1810); Edward (28 Mar 1813); Jane (25 Aug 1816), and
Elizabeth (19 Mar 1820).

James THORNTON married Rhoda SMITH of Byfield on January 30, 1837 in Byfield, Northants…Henry THORNTON was a witness… No record of a baptism of a James THORNTON has been found in Hanslope c1816/1817. James was either a son of George & Elizabeth or a nephew…I am trying to identify the origin of George THORNTON [b. c1749]…he is the only thread I have to figure out where George came from…I believe it was in Northants!

Does any of this help?

P.S. I believe that this George THORNTON is the one found in the IGI as being born c1749 in Canons Ashby (the son of George & Ann THORNTON), but I have NO proof...a bunch of the THORNTON sons marry women from this region, but I have nothing to connect George to Northants other than James and his witness Henry THORNTON!!!

I think that I would be looking for the baptism of James slightly later - in 1818. Looking at the births/baptisms of the children of George & Elizabeth, there is a hole at that date, a gap of 4 years between Jane 1816 & Elizabeth 1820. My rule of thumb is to look for births every 2 years. Children were breastfed until about the age of 1 year & that is a natural contraceptive, so that gives a common cycle of births every 2 years. The exception is when a child dies at or soon after birth. Then the next child often arrives within 1 year.
