Does anyone know how to find out information about judges? I have a ggggggrandfather who was a judge. I have been told he was a puisine judge. The name is Hamilton Smith, born in Belgium---probably in early to mid part of 1700's and came to England. He had 2 sons Charles Hamilton Smith and John Francis Smet. The name in Belgium was probably Smet or Schmidt. Any help greatly appreciated.

Have you been in contact with the person who posted these threads?

Is Francoise Elezabeth Theresia de Smet (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=446963&queryType=1&resultcount=2)related

Any record of appointment, or other mentions in the London Gazette?

Thank you Geoffers. I am in contact with the writer of the two postings, we are distant cousins so that is great.
Regarding the will of Francoise I took a change a while back and ordered it----doesn't appear to be any link there.
I have done some searches of the London Gazette for the same and variations---I get mention of the two sons but not of The Judge. I guess it would be helpful to know when the family actually came over from Belgium and the original spelling so I know exactly what it was originally. I have John Franics's will and in it he makes reference to his brother Charles and the reason he change his name to Smith was to protect family still in Europe. Also the family was Protestant.
Thanks again
