I have tried in vain to search the TNA MEPO online records for a Cyril Lawrence Barker whom I know was a constable in the Met in 1922. I have a feeling he stayed on in the force until WW2 or may have transferred to another constabulary but just can't find any trace of him until he turns up as a publican in Kent in 1945.

Can anyone out there please help?

Are there any online records? Unless something has changed very recently, you have to research it in person at Kew (or engage someone to do it for you).

The online catalogue is invaluable for planning a research strategy.

Actually a few bits and pieces are now available via TNA's 'Your Archives'.

Treehugger - have a read of TNA's research guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104)

Your Archives (http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Home_page) has these Metropolitan Police Records (http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Metropolitan_Police_Records_of_Ser vice)

Start with the alphabetical Registers of Joiners which will give you a warrant no., from which you can move onto the attestation papers.
The photos of original documents are contained in photostreams on 'flickr'

It may mean a bit of browsing to find what you want, but it's a lot cheaper than a day-return; so put the kettle on and get comfy.

Geoffers,

Thank you so much for pointing to exactly the right spot - this is an absolute goldmine and my cousin, Cyril's granddaughter will be thrilled...

Glad to have helped, I went back into 'Your Archives' and found that a couple of links appear to be temporarily broken - so it seemed easiest to point you directly to the flickr pages. Once there, you'll see the user name of the person who posted the photos, click on that and you'll see all the photos uploaded from the MEPO files. It looks like it is an ongoing project. I have no idea how much extra will be added; but at least it's a start.
