This is one of two similar pictures of a group of people I have in my possession - one of which is my 2x great grandma (3rd from left) On the back of the photograph someone has written 'Oxford Road Rambling Club) - and I know my family lived in the Manchester area.

I would like to know if anyone can date the photo by looking at the clothes they are wearing? That way I can establish the potential of my 2 x great grandad being on there as he died quite early. Suggestions welcome

Thanks!

I'd guess at about 1905, give or take a year or two. ;)

I would suggest that your image would have been taken between the years of 1893 and 1897 but more to the start of this period. The women have gigot sleeving to their bodices and whilst there are not as flouncy and puffed up as they were at the height of this fashion it does show the slow progression towards that point. Also you will note that the hair styles worn by the women are more consistant with that prior to 1895 when the loose pompadour coiffure started to come into being.

Thanks Don, my 2 x great grandad died in 1890 aged 36 so he mustn't be on the photo.....pleased to see my 2 x great grandma still got out and had fun though!!

I would still stick to my guess for lots of reasons (the very modern miss on the far right with the wide hat being one) ;)
Either way the photo is after 1890 and grandma looks to be in the thick of things. Good for her. :)
