Where to find a will

I am looking for the will of my great great grandfather Henry Lee Quilter born Leicester 1815 died 1876, I know there is a will, it was shown to my brother many years ago,Ive searched the TNA (which I find a Nightmare) but come up with nothing, ive never looked for a will before,can anyone tell me where to try next.

The Leicestershire County Record Office ([email protected]) may hold a copy of Henry's will if he died in the county. The staff are very helpful. I could have a look for you but I won't be going to Leicester until the beginning of April at the earliest.

Ive searched the TNA (which I find a Nightmare) but come up with nothing.

TNA's web-site gets easier to use with practice. There is a thread on Using The National Archives web-site (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?41973-Using-The-National-Archives-web-site) - do keep trying as there is heaps of information there.

If you get stuck using it, please ask as there are a few members who have a reasonable idea of how to navigate the site.

The main problem is that you won't find an 1876 will via TNA. Have a read of the thread to whch Sue gives a link.

Thank you everyone for your help,I had another look at TNA but a search brought up nothing,but then I did read some records of wills were destroyed by fire, Im going to contact the Leicester record office hopefully they will have a copy of it.

As mentioned, you won't find an 1876 will at TNA.

From TNA's resarch guide Wills and Death Duty Records after 1858:

"Wills proved from 12 January 1858 to the present day are held only by the Court of Probate.............."

A good way to search for wills:

"There is a detailed index to wills, called the National Probate Calendar..............."

The Probate Calendar has been copied onto film and I understand can be accessed via mormon church (LDS) record centres.

You can pay for a three year search and obtain a copy of a will via The Probate Service (http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/infoabout/civil/probate/index.htm)

The will of Henry Lee Quilter of Leicester was proved in Leicester, 1877 (from Death Duty Index on fmp).
