I am looking for any information on this christening of William Knowles on Dec. 25 1814. The parents are Thomas and Lettice. I wonder if it gives the father's occupation?

Yes and no...I would have expected at say Man Cath...Manchester.Clerk,but you got the street where he lived and the fact tyha he worked for the Post Office.

Even though Thomas rose to assistant postmaster at the main post office(1825 directory) I have only ever seen "clerk at post office" He may actually have become the Postmaster as this was what my father said. However he died in 1832 so I would have to find a directory for early 1830's. Do you know if there was one? I have bought a book "The History of the Manchester Post Office" which I hope may have some information on postmasters.

Jen, it was quite usual for people in quite high positions, who might today call themselves "chief executives" to be described as a clerk.

I had a look at the TDs available at MCL.He was not listed in the 1832 TD but in the 1829-30 TD he was listed as a clerk. In 1828 he was listed as

KNOWLES Thomas, Assistant Post Master,8 paradise Hill,Salford.

Thanks for the searches and input on "clerks" We'll have to make do with assistant post master. What a piece of luck that my mother remembered my father saying he had a relative who was the postmaster of Manchester otherwise I would not have much to go on. How I wish I had started this search long ago.
