I have a photo copy of a portrait taken probably around 1870. It has printed on its surround "By the U.S.A. Studios
London ".

I have tried looking through the web site in the previous Thread, under both "The" and "U.S.A", to no avail.

Any information as to when they were in business, etc would be most welcome.

Peter

I had great response to my request about a photographer and also the location of an ancestor's studio from: UK-PHOTOGRAPHERS-L @ rootsweb.com. Worth sending a query with as much info as possible.

USA studios were certinly still in business around 1912 with 11 locations in Londo and 4 in the provinces. I have photos with mounts that list these locations

Hi
This is my first posting as I've just joined.
I also have a photograph mounted in a folder produced by USA Studios. I think it's of my Grandma. At the back of the mounted photograph is reference to a negative no. 17212 and stamped above the addresses (of the 8 USA Studios in london and the 5 in the Provinces) is 'Peckham'. I am trying to date my photograph. Can anyone help please? Also do any records survive from the company that would indicate who bought the photograph. If so where would I find this information, please.
Regards
Pam

I asked a good source about USA Studios -
For Peter: The earliest date of any USA Studios is 1907. So if your portrait is earlier then it may be a copy done by them.

For Pam: There are no surviving business records that I know of. Any address for Peckham, as they had a few there are different addresses at different dates...

I have an old photo with USA studios on the front and cannot identify the person in it. Can someone tell me where the four or five provincial studios of USA studios were situated?

Hi, I have an undated photo of my gandma-in-law, taken at the Whitechapel branch of USA studios, I'd guess when she was about 21 in 1909/1910. The Negative number is 6620, so it seems to be reasonably early. I have 8 locations listed for London: Edware Road, Westbourne Grove, Upper Street, Holloway Road, Whitechapel Road, Rye Lane Peckham, North End Croydon, Powis Street Woolwich.

For the provinces I have Portsmouth, Ipswich, Chatham, Reading and Norwich.

I hope that helps.

I have a few photos from the USA Studios in Chatham (tentatively dated to 1905-1910) with the list of studios on the back, but the list has only 8 in London, but 5 in the provinces. I'm guessing they opened some new studios and closed others as time went by.
